While spring in Seattle can be unpredictable, it’s undoubtedly beautiful. Something about bright, sunny days emerging from the perpetual gray of winter makes it that much more special. Before you get out there and enjoy the lush scenery, UW cherry blossoms and emerging flowers, it’s time to make a few changes to your skin-care regimen. There’s no better time than now to start prepping your complexion for the impending (and highly welcomed) rising temps, sun exposure and sweaty days that lie ahead. Here are the four top tips from our licensed estheticians to help stave off vernal skin-related freak-outs.
1) Start scrubbing
After this exceptionally snowy, sludgy, and rainy winter we’ve had, there tends to be a season-long buildup on the skin—of dead skin cells, leftover product, and environmental toxins. This is why our Master Esthetician, Jamie recommends exfoliating once the season changes. “Light micro-dermabrasion, followed by a moisturizing mask, will help get rid of that old dead, winter skin,” says Jamie. To keep skin smooth and hydrated, she recommends masking up to three times a week. A few of our favorites? Epicuren’s Micro-Derm Ultra-Refining Scrub uses sustainable bamboo micro-crystals and natural extracts to lightly exfoliate the skin. Follow that with the Hydrating Mineral Mask which will provide a protective barrier and restore vitality to the skin.
2) Lighten your load
Gone are the days of snow boots, fur-lined hoods, and loading up your visage with thick creams and serums to help fight off the wicked winter wind. Come spring, it’s time to swap out your heavy formulas for lighter lotions, says our Senior Esthetician, Lisa. “While ingredients like petrolatum help protect the skin, certain products can weigh you down especially in humid weather.” Which is why we recommend an oil-free moisturizer, like product, which goes on light and smooth, but is rich enough to quench skin without kickstarting excessive oil production. Right now we’re
loving Epicuren’s Brazilian Propolis Lotion. It’s light-weight and naturally rich in vitamins, key amino acids, minerals, bioflavonoids, and micronutrients.
3) Apply (and re-apply) sunscreen
After months spent bundled up in beanies and parkas, slathering on sun protection is a must once temps start to rise, says Jamie. (Although TBH, you should have been rocking daily SPF November through March, too.) “Springtime is actually a high risk time for sunburns and sun damage,” she says. “Although the weather is warmer, it’s still so
mild you might not feel how strong the sun is. Apply sunscreen every morning and reapply it again before any outdoor activity during the day.” Her SPF recommendation? Epicuren Zinc Oxide Perfecting Sunscreen. It’s
light and transparent and the all zinc protection helps to lightly hydrate, reduce the appearance of dark spots and visibly even skin tone.
4) Don’t forget the eyes
Because the sun’s more prominent in the spring (and certainly no one is complaining), people are more prone to squinting, says Lisa. To combat the fine lines and wrinkles that can form around the eyes, it’s important to tone and soothe the delicate skin around your eyes. It helpss to ward-off the collagen-destroying effects of UVA rays, and plump up the fine lines and wrinkles that have already formed. Our pick? The Epicuren Eye Alive Serum. Enriched with licorice extract and caffeine, this serum also visibly reduces the appearance of dark circles and puffiness.
Of course, a pair of big sunglasses is never a bad idea, either.
